WACI have been scouring the internet for some great online resources for you to check out whilst we are all on lockdown. We have found a range of tutorials, theatre productions and interactive videos.
We’ll share new resources with you every week. So without further ado, this weeks picks are:

Dance

Dance with Oti Mabuse

Oti Mabuse is a professional dancer who is well known for Strictly Come Dancing. On her YouTube Channel she has a range of dance tutorials for all ages and levels

Production

National Theatre: How to Make a Puppet

The National Theatre has a short series of videos on how to create your own life-size puppet and explains the principles of bringing it to life. The only tools you need are paper, tape and scissors!

 Music

How to Create 8-bit Game Music

This a step by step tutorial by Tragic O’Hara on how to make 8-bit game music for free. All you need is a computer or laptop!

Film

Every Frame a Painting

Every Frame a Painting is a YouTube Channel with a whole range of super interesting video essays about film form.

Drama

National Theatre at Home

The National Theatre are screening a new play each week on YouTube that were originally filmed Live at the National Theatre.

WACI RCS Summer Schools Scholarships 2020

Interested in a career in the creative industries? Want to develop your skills in a chosen field?

WACI – Widening Access to the Creative Industries – are offering fully-funded places on one of the Summer Schools taking place here at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland throughout the summer school holidays. 

These courses offer an opportunity for you to try something newdevelop your existing experience and/or gain a more in-depth understanding within a variety of art forms.

Summer Schools Available

There are a variety of summer schools to choose from in Dance, Drama, Music, Film and Production. Click here to have a look at the Short Courses Summer School’s programme to help you figure out which course is the right course for you. 

Some of the courses are very popular, and spaces will fill up quickly – we’ll be assessing applications as and when they come in, so get your application in as soon as you can to avoid being disappointed!

How to apply

1. If you haven’t already please register with the WACI cohort first. It doesn’t take long and you can fill it out by clicking here

2. Then, all you need to do is fill out the application form to let us know:

  • a little bit about you
  • why you want to do the course you’ve chosen to do

If it would be easier, you can provide a voice recording or video statement in support of your application.

Fair Access Expo 2020

We are excited to announce that bookings for our Fair Access Expo are now open!

If you are a current Transitions student or a pupil from a WACI school, you with your family, friends or carers are warmly invited to our Fair Access Expo. 

When: Sun 29 March, 12:30pm – 4:30pm
Where: Royal Conservatoire of Scotland

Fair Access Expo is a chance for pupils to come along to: 

Brothers, sisters and friends alongside any other family members or carers are welcome. Refreshments will be provided. This is event is free to attend but booking is essential.

Bookings Now Open for Performance Trips

WACI is pleased to announce two performance trip opportunities for WACI pupils.

Performance trips are great to attend ahead of any interviews or auditions where you can practice critically analysing a piece of work but is also a great way to see performances that you might not otherwise see and to meet new friends that are interested in the same things you are!

MUSIC TRIP: MOVIES TO MUSICALS
Performed by the Glasgow Philharmonic


When: Fri 21 Feb, 7 pm
Where:  Meeting at RCS then short walk to Royal Glasgow Concert Hall

The 6th Annual Movies to Musicals concert will see the orchestra performing classic movie soundtracks and some of your favourite and well-loved musical songs with some of the biggest names to have graced London’s West End stages! They will be joined by their Kids’ Cast, Musical Theatre Cast, and other special guests! Come along and witness over 400 performers on stage right here in Glasgow.

MUSICAL THEATRE TRIP: CITY OF ANGELS
When: Wed 18 March, 7 pm
Where: Royal Conservatoire of Scotland

Set in the 1940s, against a backdrop of old Hollywood glamour and true-crime tales, a writer struggles to separate his real-life drama from what’s in the pages of his screenplay. A vibrant cast of characters are propelled by a brilliant jazz score through all the twists and turns of fame, fortune and film noire.

Music Recording Sound Desk

Recording Studio Taster Day Bookings Are Now Open

Do you go to one of the 37 FOCUS West schools?

Interested in Music

Want to get a taste of what it’s like to work in a real recording studio?

This one day taster is for you!

You’ll work with Jamie Savage, one of Chem19’s own experienced engineers/producers, who has worked with a broad range of artists, including Found, Twilight Sad, King Creosote, Aidan Moffat & Bill Wells, Malcolm Middleton, Zoey Van Goey & Miaoux Miaoux.

You’ll work in a small group, and learn some of the basic audio engineering theory and principles, including microphones, sound levels, and outputs – and get a chance to do some recording of your own.

We’ll meet at 10.00am at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow and travel to the studio together, returning before 4.00.

When: Monday 15th OR Tuesday 16th July, 10.00 – 4.00

Summer School Bookings Are Now Open

WACI Music Summer School  

This Summer School is a really practical week of music making and is open to anyone with an interest in music and performing. Throughout the week there will be practical collaborations, masterclass style tuition, exploration of performance anxieties and much more!

WACI Drama Summer School

This Summer School is a week full of drama activities and is open to anyone with an interest in drama. It will involve working with ideas around devising and performance. You will develop skills in performance using text, voice, physical skills and work towards creating a performance.

Family and Carer Day: Speaker Spotlight Musician Jenn Butterworth

With our Family and Carer Day steadily approaching, we are excited to announce the first of our Industry Speakers – musician Jenn Butterworth.

Jenn Butterworth is one of the foremost folk guitarists in the UK acoustic music scene.  An excellent collaborator, she has been a key member of a range of high profile folk music projects, including Ross Ainslie and Ali Hutton’s SYMBIOSIS Big Band, three Celtic Connections New Voices, four years on the BBC Hogmanay Live show as a member of the All Star House Band and recently a member of folk supergroup ‘Songs of Separation’ involving an array of prominent folk artists including Eliza Carthy, Lady Maisery and Karine Polwart.  The Songs of Separation album, conceived, arranged and recorded in just 7 days, won the title of ‘Best Album’ at the Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2017.
