WACI Lockdown Picks 5

Welcome to another week of WACI‘s favourite Lockdown Picks. Each week we take you through some of the best online resources in dance, drama, music, film and production. Enjoy!

New Second Line

This is a short performance hosted by Ted Talks which is inspired by the events of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. TED Fellow Camille A. Brown choreographed “New Second Line,”  which is a celebration of the culture of New Orleans and the perseverance of Black people in the midst of devastation. It’s a truly beautiful performance which I’d encourage you to watch even if you aren’t a dancer.

WACI have been scouring the internet for some great online resources for you to check out whilst we are all on lockdown. We have found a range of tutorials, theatre productions and interactive videos.

Oti Mabuse is a professional dancer who is well known for Strictly Come Dancing. On her YouTube Channel she has a range of dance tutorials for all ages and levels

National Theatre: How to Make a Puppet

The National Theatre has a short series of videos on how to create your own life-size puppet and explains the principles of bringing it to life. The only tools you need are paper, tape and scissors!

How to Create 8-bit Game Music

This a step by step tutorial by Tragic O’Hara on how to make 8-bit game music for free. All you need is a computer or laptop!

Every Frame a Painting

Every Frame a Painting is a YouTube Channel with a whole range of super interesting video essays about film form.

The National Theatre are screening a new play each week on YouTube that were originally filmed Live at the National Theatre.

WACI RCS Summer Schools Scholarships 2020

Interested in a career in the creative industries? Want to develop your skills in a chosen field?

WACI – Widening Access to the Creative Industries – are offering fully-funded places on one of the Summer Schools taking place here at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland throughout the summer school holidays. 

These courses offer an opportunity for you to try something newdevelop your existing experience and/or gain a more in-depth understanding within a variety of art forms.

Summer Schools Available

There are a variety of summer schools to choose from in Dance, Drama, Music, Film and Production. Click here to have a look at the Short Courses Summer School’s programme to help you figure out which course is the right course for you. 

Some of the courses are very popular, and spaces will fill up quickly – we’ll be assessing applications as and when they come in, so get your application in as soon as you can to avoid being disappointed!

1. If you haven’t already please register with the WACI cohort first. It doesn’t take long and you can fill it out by clicking here

2. Then, all you need to do is fill out the application form to let us know:

  • a little bit about you
  • why you want to do the course you’ve chosen to do

Fair Access Expo 2020

We are excited to announce that bookings for our Fair Access Expo are now open!

If you are a current Transitions student or a pupil from a WACI school, you with your family, friends or carers are warmly invited to our Fair Access Expo. 

When: Sun 29 March, 12:30pm – 4:30pm
Where: Royal Conservatoire of Scotland

Fair Access Expo is a chance for pupils to come along to: 

Brothers, sisters and friends alongside any other family members or carers are welcome. Refreshments will be provided. This is event is free to attend but booking is essential.

Family and Carer Day: Speaker Spotlight Dance Artist Lewis Normand

In the last of our speaker features ahead of our Family and Carer Day tomorrow, we welcome Dance Artist Lewis Normand.

Lewis Normand is a Scottish Dance Artist, working across performance, choreography and education. He graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with a BA in Modern Ballet in 2014. Lewis’ own work is currently supported by Dance North’s Regional Artist program and he is an alumnus of Scottish Ballet’s Choreographic Mentoring project.

Lewis works closely with Scottish Ballet’s engagement department, where he has held positions as Education Officer and Creative Associate, as well as delivering across a wide range of their classes and projects. As a dancer, Lewis has worked for Artists and Companies like David Hughes Dance, Errol White Company, Diana Loosmore, Steinvor Palsson, Tamsyn Russell, Kate Haughton, Ashley Page, Scottish Opera and Company Chordelia.
