English Support Tutorials

Judah Collins is the English Support tutor at the Conservatoire. She offers tutorials to all students who want help understanding the use of English in their programmes.

Support for Undergraduate and Master Programmes

The support tutorials offer students one hour per week of English support. Classes are between the individual student and the support tutor. Tutorials are relaxed and friendly and all about supporting you through your busy year. Students can bring anything they want help with to these sessions. The support classes are here to make sure you understand everything to do with your course.

For example, the tutorials can explain the vocabulary and language used in your first study sessions and performance classes, the content of your Music in History lectures and everything to do with written coursework.

We can also work on explaining Conservatoire emails you receive and don’t fully understand, writing biographies or CVs, writing programme notes for recitals and competitions, making applications for other courses or competitions and discussing music theory and repertoire.

Support for Doctorate Programmes

The Music English Support tutorials also extend to current international Dperf and PhD music students and importantly to those master students in year 1 or 2 who are considering applying for these doctorate programmes.

Help can be given well in advance by examining choices of research topic, creating research proposals and working on preparing for the interview itself – thinking about and rehearsing questions likely to be asked.

These Dperf and PhD support tutorials have proved to be a very popular and effective addition to the service for this year’s international master students.
