BA Acting

Welcome to the BA Acting programme!

As a student on the BA Acting programme you now have the opportunity to grow and develop as an artist and also, from day one, to establish yourself in the acting profession, both nationally and internationally.

The three years of this programme will be exciting, challenging and pass with terrifying speed, and long before you graduate you will be engaging with the profession in a variety of contexts.

We are here to enable you to develop your creative potential, and look forward to working with you to develop the range of skills, knowledge and understanding required to flourish as an actor in a constantly changing profession.

To help you make the most of this opportunity, we have produced a Programme Handbook that will be made available in September. Please make sure you read this and anything you don’t understand, just ask!

Please review your welcome week timetable, associated programme costs, and programme handbook:

A copy of the AY23-24 handbook will be available once you have matriculated.

There are a number of events organised during the induction week which will help you prepare for your studies and give you an introduction to the Conservatoire. You will also have the opportunity to meet your Head of Programme, your Head of Department and other key members of staff. These events are compulsory and it is important that you look carefully through the schedule and identify those that apply to you. You will matriculate (register on your programme) on Monday 25 September.

As you’ll have noted from the programme costs document, you are required to make a one-off payment of £120 to help defray the cost of the scripts, photocopying and teaching materials that you will be issued with at various times throughout the three years of the programme. This is collected as part of matriculation. For information on how to pay this, please see – https://portal.rcs.ac.uk/matriculation/.

All texts on the modules’ reading lists will be kept in the library. If you want to own texts, your lecturers can advise what you might want to buy.

The majority of your classes in acting, voice and movement are practical and you need to wear suitable clothing that enables you to move freely. We are not prescriptive about what you wear but please get into the habit of wearing loose clothes suitable for movement for all practical classes. Outdoor shoes should not be worn in class and jeans are not suitable for movement work. You will be provided with a locker where you can keep appropriate clothes and footwear. In addition to everyday clothing for classes, you will need to dress appropriately for acting or movement work relating to character, period and genre. Your lecturers will be able to advise you on this.

We look forward to you joining the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland BA Acting Programme and making a real contribution to this unique learning environment.
