BA Modern Ballet

Welcome to the Ballet department – on behalf of the whole Modern Ballet team, I would like to say that we are very much looking forward to meeting you and working with you to help you achieve your goals.

Induction
Please click the following links for your induction week timetable: BA MB Welcome and Induction Schedule 2023

There are a number of events organised during this week which will help you prepare for your studies and give you an introduction to the Conservatoire. You will also have the opportunity to meet your Head of Programme, your Head of Department and other key members of staff. These events are compulsory and it is important that you look carefully through the schedule and identify those that apply to you. You will matriculate (register on your programme) on Monday 25 September. More information about this process can be found here: https://portal.rcs.ac.uk/matriculation/.

The first week is designed for all new students across the Conservatoire. This week will include specific ‘Welcome Sessions’ to help you get to know the RCS and meet fellow students and staff. There will also be some practical classes scheduled in the Ballet Studios.

Before you receive your uniform you will be able to wear your own plain coloured leotards for practical classes.

Handbooks
All new students will be issued with a personal copy of the Course Handbook during the Welcome and Induction week. This is a comprehensive booklet which includes lots of information about the RCS generally and a detailed Course Outline for the BA Modern Ballet. This will outline, module by module, the structure and development of the course. During Induction Week, students will have a session with the staff which will cover this and deal with any queries which may arise.

***********************

External Examinations and Competitions
Students will be given the opportunity to study Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Vocational Graded Examinations and participate in recognised competitions. It should be noted that students will be required to pay the entry fees for any RAD exams (and the membership, if taken) and competitions themselves. They are not compulsory but are taken by many students.

***********************

Scottish Ballet
We have a strong relationship with Scottish Ballet with opportunities to visit their home at Tramway to observe the Company at work. We will also arrange for you to see Scottish Ballet performances and dress rehearsals at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow and/or Edinburgh Festival Theatre.

**********************

Performances
As the RCS is so centrally located, students will find it easy (and are required) to attend relevant performances in both dance and other art forms.  We are fortunate to benefit from regular visits to Glasgow by many of the leading dance and theatre companies.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy care for students in the ballet department is provided by the Performance Medicine Team from Scottish Ballet. This includes specialist screening for all students at the start of the year, weekly clinics and follow-up treatment/diagnostics alongside a schedule of regular healthcare talks with the Performance Medicine Team. There is an additional annual payment of approximately £550-£600 to cover the cost of this service. An exact cost will be communicated in due course with options to pay in instalments if requested. This is a compulsory payment for all students and more information will follow.

Programme Costs
BA Modern Ballet Programme Costs 23

You are required to make a one-off payment of £100 to help defray the cost of the course equipment, photocopies that you will be issued with at various times throughout the three years of the Programme. This sum will be collected from you by a member of the Academic Administration and Support Office staff when you matriculate.
