National Schools Workshop: Design

 Set and Costume Design

This workshop is aimed at: 

Students studying Art and Design or Drama at N5, Higher or Advanced HigherPupils who have an interest in set and costume design, but who are not studying Art and Design or Drama are also welcome. 

Why should you do it? 

If you are curious about what options there are for further study beyond school and careers in design for theatre, TV and film or live events, this is the workshop for you.  If you are interested in any aspect of production arts such as prop making, set construction or scenic art, this will also be a chance to find more out about this world. 

Tutor

Katy McGlynn is a Set and Costume Designer for theatre and a Production Lecturer for the RCS Juniors ProgrammeShe is a graduate of Art, Philosophy and Contemporary Practice at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and she also studied Set and Costume Design at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Katy has worked on productions for theatre and film including the Ayr Gaiety, Paisley Opera, Wonder Fools and Visible Fictions. 

Workshop Content 

  • Exploration of design elements of performances pupils have already seen (these can be live or digital performances) 
  • An outline of the whole design process in theatre 
  • Paper set model-making activity, inspired by a short scene from a play.  This will involve designing, making and decorating a 3-dimensional paper set to represent the world of the play, as the pupils interpret it. 
  • Information on aAccess and Higher Education courses that incorporate Production Art and Design 
  • Careers in Production Art and Design

All workshops will: 

  • Require two periods or equivalent 
  • Be targeted toward S5-6 
  • Be offered on a first come first served basis 
  • Provide students with an insight into the fully funded access programmes at RCS, further and high education pathways and potential career options 
  • Serve as talking point on their personal statement 
  • Provide them with transferable skills for their SQA assessments
