COMMUNITY MAP

Performing and Production Arts in SIMD20 Areas

We often are asked ‘What is a good way to start out in my artform?’

Whether you’re looking to start out in acting, music, filmmaking, production arts or technology or dance, most often, getting involved in a local group is the best way to:

  • explore your artform and what is involved
  • gain valuable skills
  • make contacts
  • find out if it’s something you really want to do

It can be a challenge finding local groups if you don’t know anyone. Sometimes we might also need to travel to the next town. So we’ve done some research that we hope will help you connect, get involved and start your journey into the performing and production arts.

Good luck and we hope that you might just find your new most favourite thing to do!

Q: Would you like some tips on how to use the map? A: Scroll down underneath the map for tips and info.

Questions you may have:

How to use the map

To use our map, firstly, it is best viewed on a tablet or computer. You can view it on your phone, it just might be a bit more tricky to navigate. Once ready, you can search by moving the map around and zooming in and out to see what is there. You can click on icons to find out more about them.

You can zoom by double tapping or clicking, pinching or using the icon on the top right of the map:

Identifying your artform

We’ve created six icons to help you identify your artform:

 Community Arts

 Dance

 Drama

 Filmmaking

 Music

 Production

You can also use the search bar at the top of the map and can see a list at the side of the map. There is a filter feature that you can access by clicking the arrow button  then clicking the filter button . This is recommended for people who have used filtering features online before.

When you hover over a star, it will tell you the name of the activity and cost. When you click the star, it will give you more information to help you explore further and view their website or social media pages. If you click the larger circles, it will display all the activity in that area, within a 5-mile radius.

Areas the map covers

The areas of activity on the map take place in the following local authority areas:

  • Dundee
  • Glasgow
  • Inverclyde
  • North Ayrshire
  • North Lanarkshire
  • West Dunbartonshire

How we choose the areas on the map

Much of the work we do in Fair Access is concentrated around supporting those who live in an SIMD20 postcode. These are areas that are under-resourced in various ways. It could be from lack of access to quality housing, education, health services, good employment and other services that affect our everyday lives. The SIMD information from the Scottish Government helps to highlight where efforts can be made to help to bridge some of those gaps.

The SIMD20 list is large so we have chosen to highlight the top 6 local authorities within the SIMD20 list and the top 10 areas (or localities) within those local authorities. This way we can keep the map focused, manageable, and useful to those who may need it most.

How did you collate the map information?

We have included information that is freely available on the internet. We will update the map information on a yearly basis but if you know of any information contained within the map that is wrong or are running a programme or service within our areas of interest and would like to be included, please do get in touch at fairaccess@rcs.ac.uk.

Please note: the programmes and services featured on the map are all free or under £10 per week to participate in which is important to us in highlighting accessible activities. We have also included the email address and website or social media page so that you can contact each activity directly for further information. Click on the activity star to see this information. We do not endorse or have any affiliation with highlighted activities. They are purely for reference and information purposes.
