A Warm Welcome to All Our Students

 Events and Activity Kickstarting 2023.24

Get Into: Production and Guitar, Interview Skills and New Ambassadors Meeting

☀️ Fair Access are celebrating the start of the new academic year for 2023/24. We’re thrilled to have all our students back, new and returning, with a host of activities to start us off.

🔈 GET INTO: PRODUCTION

Those interested in learning about stage management, lighting, prop making, set design and more were off to a great start with their first session in sound with RCS’s Head of Production Ros Maddison.

🎸 GET INTO: GUITAR

A classroom with 5 students and tutor talking about guitars

This strand of our ‘Get Into’ programme is designed to develop performance skills and general musicianship. Embarking on a journey of discovery, delving into the fundamentals of guitar playing while fostering a love for music. Led by RCS students who are passionate about nurturing new talent, students will go on to learn everything from basic chords and strumming techniques to sightreading and improvisation. With weekly group lessons and one-to-one attention, students will build skills, gain confidence, and develop a solid foundation in guitar playing.

🎓 TRANSITIONS YOA INTERVIEW SKILLS

A studio classroom with people at tables chatting

Kickstarting the Transitions Year of Applications student activities for the year was an interview skills workshop. These are invaluable workshops in preparing our students in getting ready to apply for further study in the performance and production arts.

And lastly, a huge thank you to all our new Fair Access Ambassadors who attended the first meet-up of the year. It was great to see everyone getting to know each other and we’re looking forward to the year ahead with you all. Welcome!

Creative Conversations, Get Ready and Ambassadors

 Recent Events and Activity

Creative Conversations, Get Ready, and Ambassadors

☀️ As we approach the end of the academic year, we’ve had a busy time across our Fair Access departments.

🎙️ CREATIVE CONVERSATIONS

Panel of people talking to students

Last week we held two Creative Conversations. The first at St Margaret Mary’s Secondary School in Castlemilk. Actors Atta Yaqub and Martin Docherty and BA Musical Theatre student Star Penders spoke to Higher and NC5 pupils about their careers, obstacles and inspirations. Marty Docherty was once a St Margaret Mary’s pupil and is still a local Castlemilk lad.

The second was at Holyrood Secondary in Govanhill, this time with a musical focus. Musicians Michael John McCarthy, Ray Aggs and RCS masters student Dean Garrity talked to a group of pupils about the joys of musical collaboration, taking creative risks and why being in a band is such a good thing!

🎥 Filmmaker Seth Hardwick is making a short film on both events that we hope to share with you all.

🎓 GET READY

Two students doing a presentation

This week, Transitions held the first of two events for students, parents and carers in our Get Ready series.

Get Ready to Apply focused on information around personal statements, UCAS and interview skills. The Transitions team have been working away creating a brand new resource ‘Get Ready to Apply’ which can be accessed on our portal:

Get Ready to Study, took place last night and we’d like to thank Ken Fairbrother, the RCS SU President and Transitions Alumni, for coming along and telling us more about what support, communities and opportunities there are available at RCS.

A huge thank you also to Gem and Charlotte for sharing their own experiences of being a new student, for giving lots of tips, advice and motivation. It was great to see you all there and please keep in touch and let us know how you are getting on.

⭐️ FAIR ACCESS AMBASSADORS

Lastly, the final meeting for session 2022.23 of our fabulous Fair Access ambassadors and Transitions alumni/student assistants took place this week. A chance to celebrate their amazing year and thank them for everything they’ve done to spread the word about Fair Access in their schools, colleges and communities. We’ve learned so much from them and had a great laugh at the same time! Thank you!

Roving Reporters at Performance Trips

 ROVING REPORTERS OUT AND ABOUT

Coming live from Transitions Performance Trips

Story screenshot from Instagram showing young man with microphone

Three of our Fair Access Ambassadors became Roving Reporters at Transitions performance trips recently. They captured some great opinions and reactions from some of the students attending the trips.

At the National Theatre of Scotland’s ‘Kidnapped’ and Scottish Ballet’s ‘Streetcar Named Desire’, Jade, Sam and Jessica got the scoop on what people thought of the shows. They asked what star ratings students would give each show and asked why they felt it was important for students studying the performing and production arts to attend as many shows as possible.

People had different views on the performances but everyone agreed that getting to see such a range of high-quality performances for free, and in the company of other young creative people was a chance not to be missed!

‘We’re all from different artforms but on this night we all share one thing in common; we’re going to see this show together and can talk to each other about it!’

Hosting performance trips for students is just one of the ways in which both Transitions and WACI can help students.
