How did you find out about Transitions?

A teacher in secondary school

When did you get involved with Transitions?

2018

What was the most useful thing you learned about your artform and yourself?

There are loads of useful things that I learned about myself and my art form during the time I was with Transitions. From the great people at Transitions, professionals in the industry and other artists. My favourite thing I learned about my artform was to have fun and not take myself so seriously. I found the best work I have created and stuck with are the ones that I had the most fun when creating. Happiness is always a great emotion to work and create with! The most useful thing I learned about myself was that I could do way more than I originally thought I could, even when the motivation left me I could still create and that was enough.

Why should someone think about joining Transitions?

People should consider joining Transitions for many reasons, such as the wonderful people you will meet! Whether it be someone interested in the same artform as yourself or something completely different that you’ve never even heard of! Or the wonderful opportunities which are available to you through Transitions such as summer courses, opportunities to collaborate with others in the industry and mentoring from a professional in your artform. This allows you to gain new skills, new friends and even new interests. Transitions is a great way to gain confidence in yourself and your artform with guidance and advice from professionals.

What is one piece of advice would you give to any current student on Transitions?

One piece of advice I would give current Transitions students is to reflect. Reflect on things that have happened or that are currently happening, whether that be to you or someone else. There are many ways and many things to reflect on but I personally would recommend keeping a journal or a notebook, or even a post-it note to keep note of how your feeling before, after and during creating artwork. It can also be used to keep track of ideas, current works and simply things that interest you. I find it especially therapeutic and inspiring when looking back at my notebook when I am stuck as I can look at my progress and remember how far I have come instead of simply going straight into the unknown.

If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently within your time with Transitions?

If I were to go back and do Transitions all over again, there are loads of things that I would not necessarily change but rather tweak as I love were I have ended up thanks to Transitions ! I would definitely go sign myself up for more different things that weren’t in my artform during the time of years where school had closed for the summer. The trips I was a part of that had nothing to do with my artform were some of the ones where I had the most fun. Or keep better track of my diary so that I didn’t overbook myself and stress myself for no reason.
