Getting it Right
We set out to try to understand the key principles that underpin well-developed and skillfully delivered projects for and with care experienced and estranged young people. Getting it right for us meant drawing on existing expertise whilst recognising the potential for new discoveries, increased nuance and fresh thinking.
All of the ‘Let’s Talk About’ projects were designed in consultation with agencies that specialise in working with care experienced and estranged people and with artists and young people from these backgrounds. They drew on existing models and theories of best practice, whilst adapting to the needs and aspirations of the participants as the projects evolved.
Key Findings
-
Established, ongoing groups and supportive communities which provide familiar and safe spaces where participants can work openly and creatively.
-
Partnerships work when there is a shared belief in the process of the project and an understanding of how to collaborate effectively.
-
Facilitators who are not only artform specialists but also experienced in providing holistic support for participants and ‘holding’ space sensitively.
-
The opportunity to experience new things and share an artist’s own passion for their work which widens horizons, increases engagement and inspires participants.
-
A democratic structure which encourages shared responsibility and autonomy, which feels supported but equal.
-
An empathetic approach which is underpinned by trust and respect, along with robust support systems in place.
-
Time, space and resources which allow for responsiveness, adaptability and the absence of pressure around the work created.
- Clear framing and boundaries with careful consideration of how the project ends and what support continues afterwards.
Research
Participants and artists from our four practical projects were involved in a research project to help us identify any key features which underpinned delivery of the projects, for and with care experienced and estranged young people, which could usefully inform and support practice in this area. The report provides summaries of the findings of each of the four projects and can be read here.
